Air Fryer Spinach Artichoke Dip Recipe

Sharing is caring!

This air fryer spinach artichoke dip will be a hit at just about any party or gathering. Baking it in the air fryer makes the cheese all melty and the bread (if you make it in a bread bowl) chewy and crisp.

spinach artichoke dip in a bread bowl

This dip becomes deliciously rich and creamy when baked in the air fryer. No need to heat up your house to bake it in the oven. The round bread bowl used to hold the dip will fit into most air fryers.

I like to serve up this dip in a sourdough bread bowl. Everyone loves the look plus the part of the bread removed to create the bowl becomes tasty dippers. Dice them into bite sized pieces and include them with a selection of vegetables and crackers.

You don’t have to use a bread bowl. You can always make this recipe in a baking dish. Choose a air fryer safe dish and follow the directions for baking in an air fryer to melt the cheese in this dip. Passing on the bread bowl can turn this recipe into a low carb or keto spinach artichoke dip. See the notes below for some suggestions on low carb dippers.

No matter how you choose to make this dip it’s a winner that everyone loves!

Spinach Artichoke Dip Ingredient Notes:

ingredients for spinach artichoke dip on a table

Artichoke hearts – use canned or jarred in water not oil

Frozen spinach – you’ll want to thaw and squeeze all the extra liquid out

Water chestnuts – I start with sliced water chestnuts and then dice them up. You can also use whole water chestnuts diced into pieces.

Cream cheese – go with full fat cream cheese for a creamy dip. You can use light cream cheese if you want to cut calories but keep the creamy texture.

Mayonnaise – use your favorite brand.

Sour cream – you can also use Greek yogurt.

Spices – garlic powder, oregano, salt, ground black pepper and crushed red pepper

Cheese – shredded mozzarella and grated parmesan

Green onions – thinly sliced

Round loaf of bread – sourdough bread has the best texture. The crust is chewy and doesn’t become soggy while holding the dip.

Dippers: carrot sticks, celery sticks, pepper slices or other vegetables, crackers, pita chips or bread cubes.

How to make Air Fryer Spinach Artichoke Dip:

I like to save myself time while making this recipe by prepping some of the ingredients that will be used:

  • Drain and coarsely chop the artichoke hearts and the water chestnuts. Set them aside.
  • Squeeze the thawed frozen spinach to remove excess water. Set it aside.
  • If you have a block of parmesan cheese grate the amount needed for this recipe and set it aside.
  • Slice the green onions.
  • Take the cream cheese out and allow it to come to room temperature to make it easier to mix the ingredients in.

To make this recipe:

In a large bowl combine the softened cream cheese, mayonnaise, sour cream, garlic powder, oregano, salt, ground black pepper and crushed red pepper. Mix until smooth.

Mix in the artichokes, spinach and water chestnuts. Stir well until combined.

Mix in the parmesan cheese and ½ cup of the mozzarella cheese.

Prepare the bread bowl:

Using a sharp knife cut the top of the bread off being careful to not cut through the sides or bottom of the bread. Remove the top and set aside. Pull out some of the bread from the inside of the loaf to create a bowl. Leave at least a ½ inch layer of bread inside the bowl (sides and bottom).

Spoon the dip into the bread bowl. Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese over the top. Sprinkle the sliced green onion on top of the cheese.

Wrap the bottom of the bread bowl in aluminum foil. Place in the air fryer and cook at 350 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes or until the cheese on top has melted and begins to lightly brown. If the cheese hasn’t melted then continue to heat the dip for 2 minutes at a time until it is melted.

Serve with your choice of dippers.

Tips, substitutions and FAQ’s

How long can spinach dip sit out at room temperature?

When serving spinach dip, it should sit out at room temperature for no more than two hours. You can extend the serving time by placing the serving platter/plate on a tray of ice.

Can you make spinach dip ahead of time?

Yes, spinach dip can be made 1 to 3 days ahead of time. Make the dip but do not place it in the bread bowl until you are ready to serve. This will keep the bread bowl from absorbing moisture from the dip and becoming soggy.

Can you freeze spinach dip?

No, you should not freeze spinach dip. Both mayonnaise, sour cream and Greek yogurt (if you use it in place of sour cream) will all separate when thawing. This will make the dip watery.

Can you use fresh spinach in place of frozen in the dip?

You can use fresh spinach, but it will need to be prepped before adding to the dip. You will need to use a larger amount of fresh spinach to replace the frozen spinach. Place 1-2 teaspoons of oil in a skillet and add 16 ounces of fresh spinach. Cook the spinach for 3 to 5 minutes over a medium heat until it is cooked down. Allow the spinach to cool and then squeeze out the remaining water. Add the cooled spinach to the dip.

Looking for a way to use up leftover dip? Try some of these ideas:

Spread leftover dip on a half of a flour tortilla, top with some extra shredded cheese, fold in half and toast in a skillet to create a spinach artichoke quesadilla.

Split a boneless chicken breast and stuff with left over dip. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 20 minutes or until the juices run clear and the internal temperature is 165 degrees to create a delicious spinach artichoke stuffed chicken.

Create a easy to make French Bread Pizza. Split a loaf of French bread in half. Spread leftover dip on the piece of bread, top with shredded Parmesan and mozzarella.

Try a stuffed grilled cheese sandwich. Butter two slices of your favorite bread. Place a slice of bread, butter side down on a hot skilled, top with leftover dip and a sprinkle of mozzarella cheese. Top with the remaining slice of bread and toast in a skillet.
