Before making this recipe you will want to prep your butter. Cut the butter into slices and refrigerate them for 15 minutes. You will want the butter slices to be very cold so it can be cut into the flour. Don’t freeze them. You don’t want them to be frozen solid. Just very cold.

Ingredients to make Homemade Cheese Biscuits in the Air Fryer:

All purpose flour – use your favorite brand of all purpose flour for this recipe. I have also used white wheat flour to make these biscuits.

Butter – I use very cold salted butter for this recipe. You can also used unsalted butter if desired. The biscuits will taste delicious with either one. Make sure to prep the butter as discussed above.

Milk and Buttermilk – buttermilk adds to the flavor of the biscuit and also makes them a bit flakier. I like to use a mixture of milk and buttermilk. Don’t have buttermilk? No worries. Check out the FAQ section for tips on what to use in place of buttermilk.

Baking powder – this is used to help the biscuits rise.

Granulated Sugar – use white granulated sugar for this recipe. The amount of sugar isn’t enough to add flavor but it does help with the texture of the finished biscuit.

Salt – salt adds flavor to the dough and is another ingredient that helps with the texture of the biscuits. Use your favorite type of salt (regular, sea salt, etc). Just avoid kosher or salt with large crystals. You don’t want to end up with salt pieces in the biscuits.

Melted butter – this is brushed on to the biscuits at the end of baking to give them a nice golden color and delicious buttery flavor.

You’ll also need an air fryer to make these biscuits.

How to make Cheese Biscuits In The Air Fryer:

Preheat your air fryer according to the manufacturers directions.

If you purchase larger blocks of cheese start by shredding the cheese before you begin this recipe. You can also use store bought shredded cheese.

In a large mixing bowl mix together the dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, sugar and salt). Stir to combine.

Place the cold butter slices into the flour mixture. Using your hands, fork or a pastry cutter, work the cold butter into the biscuits. It will resemble crumbly dough and you will see bits of butter spread throughout.

Add the wet ingredients (milk and butter milk) to the flour mixture. Stir until just combined. You don’t want to overwork the dough.

Sprinkle some flour on to a dry surface. Turn the dough out of the bowl onto the floured surface. Pat the dough out into a circle.

Using a biscuit cutter or a glass to cut the biscuits out of the dough. Roll the scraps of dough together and continue to cut out biscuits.

Place biscuits in a single layer the air fryer basket leaving some space between them and brush the melted butter on the biscuits. You can spray the air fryer basket with a bit of cooking spray if desired. I find that they don’t stick to the basket due to the butter in the biscuits.

Cook in the air fryer at 390 degrees for 9 minutes. The biscuits should have golden brown tops. Different air fryers might need to cook another minute or two in order to make give you golden brown biscuits.

Allow to cool and enjoy!

Pro Tip to make fluffy biscuits:

Leave space between the biscuits when cooking. They will expand and rise a bit. You want to leave room so they can do this. Try leaving about 1 inch between the biscuits.

For the best results don’t use aluminum foil, parchment paper or a silicone mat to line the air fryer basket. You want the hot air to flow evenly around the biscuit so it will cook on both sides. Lining the basket can cut down on the air flow and your biscuits will take longer to brown the outside of the biscuits.

Depending upon your air fryer model you may need to cook the biscuits an additional 1 to 2 minutes. If the biscuits are not browned after 9 minutes then cook got an additional 1 to 2 minutes or until the tops of the biscuits are golden brown.

How to store leftover biscuits:

Allow any leftover biscuits to cool to room temperature before storing them. Place the leftovers in an airtight container or a food storage bag. Store in the refrigerator for 5 to 7 days.

Can you make these biscuits in the oven?

Sure you can. Anything made in the air fryer can be cooked in the oven. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Place the biscuits on a baking sheet and bake 12 to 15 minutes or until the tops are golden brown.

I don’t have buttermilk. Can I substitute something else?

If you don’t have buttermilk then you can use milk to create this quick buttermilk to use in the recipe. In a 1/2 measuring cup place 1 1/2 teaspoons of lemon juice, or white vinegar. Add milk to fill up the measuring cup. Stir the mixture and then use in the recipe.

How do I freeze these biscuits?

To freeze these biscuits place the cut biscuits on a baking sheet. Place the baking sheet into the freezer for 4 hours. This will be enough to freeze the dough. Place the frozen biscuits into a freezer bag, press all of the air out and seal. Mark the bag with the date. Freeze up to 2 months.

To use the frozen biscuits just remove them and place on the air fryer basket. Cook them in the air fryer at 390 degrees for 11 to 12 minutes or until the biscuits are golden brown.

What to serve with air fryer biscuits?

These biscuits are delicious when served with your favorite dishes. They are perfect for soup, chili such as this Beef and Chorizo chili, casseroles and a whole lot more. Use these biscuits to make breakfast sandwiches. Split the biscuits in half and fill with a fried egg and some homemade breakfast sausage or bacon.

Try topping these biscuits with your favorite jam, jelly, honey, cream cheese or even sausage gravy.
