Air Fryer Apple Pie are an easy to make and tasty way to get all the flavors of an apple pie in a hand held treat. Store bought biscuits are filled with apple pie filling, rolled in cinnamon sugar and then air fried until golden brown.
After seeing recipes online for apple pie bombs (canned biscuits filled with apple pie filling and rolled into a ball) I gave them a try. After fighting with trying to keep the filling from squeezing out of the seams while cooking I knew there had to be an easier way to make them. I decided to try folding the biscuits in half so I could seal the seams with a fork. It worked out great!
- The edges were easy to seal
- It prevented filling from leaking out
- Plus I could actually get more apple pie filling into each piece
How to make Air Fryer Apple Pie
These hand held apple pies, also called stuffed biscuits, are a family favorite. They make perfect lunch bag treats for the kids. You can eat them as they are or try some of the serving suggestions and variations listed below.
Ingredient notes for Air Fryer Apple Pie:
Canned biscuits: for this recipe I used Pillsbury Grands biscuits. Since they are so large I cut them in half for this recipe. If you choose to use smaller sized biscuits, such as Pillsbury’s 10 count biscuits, you may no want to cut them in half as they will make a smaller sized hand pie.
Apple Pie Filling: use your favorite store bought pie filling or your favorite homemade recipe. I have tried a variety of canned fillings (about 21 ounces in size) such as the Walmart generic brand, Lucky Leaf and Comstock. They all work great so the choice is up to you.
Granulated sugar: I used a store brand of granulated sugar.
Cinnamon: use your favorite brand of ground cinnamon.
How To Make Air Fryer Apple Pie:
Preheat your air fryer according to the manufacturers directions. If your air fryer doesn’t have any specific directions for preheating then, if this is the first time you are using it that day, run it at 350 degrees for 3 minutes. This should be enough time to preheat it.
Remove the biscuits from the can and cut in half. Roll the pieces into balls and set aside.
Most apple pie fillings are made from apple slices. Smaller pieces make it easier to use as filling. Prepare the apple pie filling by dicing the slices into small pieces about 1/2 inch in size. Set aside.
Using your fingers, or a rolling pin, form each ball of dough into a flat circle about 3 to 4 inches wide.
Place a tablespoon of apple pie filling on one side of the dough circle. Fold in half. Use a fork and seal the seam by gently pressing down around the edges to crimp the dough.
In a bowl combine the granulated sugar and cinnamon. Roll each apple pie in the cinnamon sugar mixture. Place in the air fryer, leaving some space between each one.
Cook at 350 degrees for 5 to 7 minutes or until the apple pie is lightly browned.
Turn the apple pie over and cook at 350 degree for another 2 minutes.
Cooking Tip: Keep in mind that all air fryers vary in cooking temperatures. If you are unsure how long to cook these in your particular air fryer check them after 5 minutes to see if they are browned. If not continue to cook for an additional 2 minutes.
Tips, substitutions and FAQ’s:
Can I use other types of pie filling?
You sure can. Replace the apple pie filling with another type of pie filling such as cherry or blueberry. Lucky Leaf has a delicious apple caramel filling that tastes great in these hand pies. You can even use homemade apple pie filling in these.
Expert Tip: Be sure to seal the edges well by crimping with a fork. Pressing or rolling the biscuits into rounds about 3 to 4 inches wide will prevent them from expanding too much while cooking. Sealing the edges well will keep the filling from leaking out while cooking. The dough will still rise a bit but the halves will not separate if crimped well.
Can I bake them in the oven instead?
Yes, these can be baked in the oven on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Preheat the oven to 375 and bake the pies for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown.
Storage Instructions:
You can serve these while they’re warm or room temperature or store the cooled apple hand pies until you’re ready to serve. Store in an covered container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.
The pies can be placed in the air fryer for 2 minutes on 350 degrees to warm them back up again.
